Sahara music

The Sahara Desert is famous for it’s endless sand dunes and rock formations, but it’s also the root of some great musicians which I would like to present you today.

First let’s have a look at Tinariwen. Tinariwen is a band of Tuareg musicians, the band was formed in 1979. The group first started to gain a following outside the Sahara region in 2001, with the release of The Radio Tisdas Sessions, and the performances at Festival au Désert in Mali and at the Roskilde festival in Denmark. Their popularity rose internationally with the release of the critically acclaimed Aman Iman in 2007. Tinariwen’s biography has variously been described as “the most compelling of any band” (Songlines), “the most rock’n'roll of them all” (The Irish Times), “hard-bitten” (Slate.com), and “dramatic” (The Independent). The band is set to release a new album entitled Tassili on August 30, 2011 so stay tuned for it.
Below a short selection of some songs:
Ali Farka Touré was born on the October 31, 1939 and died on the March 7, 2006. Ali was a Malian singer and guitarist, and one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians. His music is widely regarded as representing a point of intersection of traditional Malian music and its North American cousin, the blues. The belief that the latter is historically derived from the former is reflected in Martin Scorsese’s often quoted characterization of Touré’s tradition as constituting “the DNA of the blues”. Touré was ranked number 76 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

Tamikrest is a group of musicians who belong to the Tuareg folk. The band was founded in 2006. They mix traditional African music with Western rock and pop influences and sing in Tamashek. Main songwriter and leader of the band is Ousmane Ag Mossa. Their music is characterized by electric guitars and vocals, youyous, bass, drums, djembé and other percussion instruments.
